Absolutely wonderful atmosphere and food! I loved the little fireplace and the old pictures on the wall. The Beef Wellington was a real delight. Highly recommended countryside experience!

Would certainly recommend the Plowden Arms we went for Sunday lunch and wow what a lunch! a real home made roast dinner for myself and husband had the Bouillabaisse a cheeseboard for myself and the chocolate pot for hubby the food was well presented and tasted delicious. A real warm welcome with a drink at the bar We will defiantly be going back I have the feeling this will become our local and yet it is a good 30min drive but well worth the visit.

A religeous experience for the true foodie.

I'm a real restaurant snob, I don't generally like eating out as I'm so often disappointed. My wife dragged me to the Plowden Arms about 18 months ago and it changed how I view eating out. Every time I have been the food has been outstanding, and the service has been excellent. The PA is proof that excellence can be delivered consistently. The food really is in a class of its own. The dishes are not fussy, they don't try too hard and then fail to deliver, they're just the most fantastically well thought through takes on traditional English food that has mostly been forgotten by the nation. The food just speaks to me and makes me feel like nothing bad can happen in the two or three hours I'm there. The taste sensations are simply the best I've ever experienced, so much so that they transport me. I rarely go elsewhere now as even Michelin starred places don't seem to hit the nail on the head like the Plowden Arms does. If you want fantastic old school cocktails, followed by venison that will make you weep with joy then you've come to the right place. I love it so much I'm going again tonight.

"What a truly amazing find.I visit as frequently as I can and WHY!!!!. I come away feeling very satisfied, the food is outstanding, incorporating old traditional recipies, the wines, are excellent with a good variety on offer and the friendly staff make your evening one to remember, all accompanied by Twenties style music which gives it a lovely ambiance plus a log fire in winter time. What can one say.....WONDERFUL". Stephen Hall.

Visited for the first time last Saturday....it's an amazing place, lovely 1920s feel with décor and music to match. This is taken through the menu too but with the modern touch. Outstanding food with great service and atmosphere...felt like nothing was too much trouble. We had children with us who thought the chicken was amazing and my daughter said the mash was the best she'd ever tasted! Can't wait to visit my father-in-law again....we'll be back! Looking forward to a visit in the summer too...facilities look great!

I love the 1920's feel to the place...I visit the the Plowden Arms whenever I'm in the area.

If like me you like ambrosial food, great ambience and friendly yet professional staff, the Plowden Arms really is the place to go. I love the 1920's feel to the place, which is not only a well thought idea but the staff REALLY do have a passion for that era - even the background music reflects this. Very refreshing. As a sea food lover, I have tasted well presented delicious Oysters and recently indulged myself with their Scallops (two helpings) which were perfectly cooked and served with great tasting Hollandaise sauce. I make a point of visiting the the Plowden Arms whenever I am in the area.

A warm, welcoming country pub with top notch food and beers...

Matthew and Ruth have transformed the Plowden Arms into a warm, welcoming country pub with top notch food and beers, don't miss their pie and a pint for £8.50 on a Wednesday. Their menu revives good old fashioned British food and drinks the hop decorations add a top of rural England to this Shiplake pub.

Great service as ever

I took my family there for a meal for the first time last week having heard great things from friends. We were not disappointed at all. The service was excellent, we were made to feel welcome as soon as we arrived and nothing was too much trouble.

The food arrived in good time, not too fast to be fast food and not too slow that we died of hunger. When it arrived it was delicious - we all couldn't resist having a try of each others!

All in all a wonderful family meal out and we'll be back again soon!
